Non-Aligned Movement Summit held Thursday in Tehran in Iran.

PHNOM PENH (Cambodia Herald) - Prime Minister Hun Sen has appealed to members of the Non-Aligned Movement to support Cambodia's bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.

In an address to a two-day summit in Tehran, the prime minister noted that the movement now covered 60 percent of the seats in the United Nations.

NAM should ensure it plays a significant role in protecting benefits for developing countries and "finding solutions for big challenges at both local and global levels," he said.

Hun Sen urged the movement to reinforce its position on eliminating nuclear weapons, promoting cooperation between developing countries and solving environmental issues.

"We are all pround of the five decades of achievement of the Non-Aligned Movement in struggling for independence as well as offering a neutral forum for weak countries with the aim of ensuring peace and development," he said.

After the Tehran summit, the prime minister is scheduled to travel to Urumqi in western China to visit an China-Eurasia Expo. He is due back in Cambodia on Monday.
