Cambodia to allocate $400 mln to defense and security

PHNOM PENH, 28 November 2012 (The Cambodia Herald) - The government will allocate $400 million to defense and security spending next year, amounting to 22 percent of expenditure and 2.5 percent of gross domestic product.

Finance Minister Keat Chhon said defense and security spending needed to be kept below 3.0 percent of GDP.

Among other items, health spending is targeted at $225 million next year while education spending is expected to reach $280 million.

Defense Minister Tea Banh said earlier this month that Cambodia had bought 100 tanks and armored vehicles from Eastern Europe to improve the nation's military capacity.
