(CNA) A Cambodian woman who was brought to Taiwan to work illegally
visited the National Immigration Agency's Nantou branch Tuesday to thank
officials there for helping her return to Taiwan to join her Taiwanese
husband.
The woman, known by her alias of A-ling, was brought to Taiwan by a labor broker in 2005 to work illegally under the pretence that she was the spouse of a local man.
She was sent to work as a maid in Taichung and then as an operator at a tea plant in Minjian, Nantou County, where she was nabbed for being an illegal worker in November, 2010. She was eight months pregnant.
A male Taiwanese worker, known by his nickname of A-Ming, at the tea plant came forward at the time to say he was the father of the baby. He turned to Legislator Lin Ming-chen of Nantou for help.
He told Lin that he would spare no efforts to help A-Ling stay in the country, saying he would marry her and make an honest woman of her.

Through Lin's mediation, the local government first confirmed A- Ming's paternity through a DNA test, and then registered the baby as his child following its birth. The couple got married in Taipei after their child was born.
As an illegal worker, however, A-Ling was deported to Cambodia early this year, but the immigration officials in Nantou helped her to apply for an entry permit again.
Since there are no diplomatic ties between Taiwan and Cambodia, A- Ling had to send her application to the Republic of China's representative office in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, the nearest ROC office to Cambodia, and thanks to the help from the Nantou immigration officials, she got her visa eventually and returned to Taiwan.
"I will do my best to be a good wife, care for my husband and parents, and obey the law," A-Ling told the immigration officials in fluent Mandarin.
